Sure, Rolling Stone Sucks, But....

Check out this discussion of soundalike songs. I can agree with some of them, but others are quite a stretch. At the end of the article is a link to an entire site devoted to the quest of finding soundalike songs.

Reminds me of "Spot The Similarity," a feature on a weekly show called "Psychedelic Sunday With Russell Carey" I used to listen to in Columbus, OH in the 80's. (Yes, I ripped off that title for my weekly blog post/podcast.)

I used to keep track of soundalikes, but I've been lazy of late. I can't even think of one at the moment.

Got any you can think of?

Shortly after my first trip to New Orleans I was listening to some early Louis Armstrong. There was a song called "Muskrat Ramble" that bugged the hell out of me because I knew it and couldn't place it.

After a few listens, I realized I was listening to a dixieland version of "The I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-to- Die-Rag", recorded about 33 years earlier.

I've always thought that the riff on the Chilli Peppers 'Can't Stop' is very similar to the one on 'Siva' by Smashing Pumpkins. It's still a great song though :)

a lot of them I agree with, but some I have no idea how they feel they sound alike. For example, Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and Boston’s “More Than a Feeling”. huh? yeah, they both use 4 basic chords, but so do a thousand other songs.
